What Did They Know That We Don’t Know??

Continued from yesterday…

Suggesting that God lies within you while still transcending all things poses a challenge to our logical minds. How can everyone be one with a God, whose essence is love, when humanity has so much evil and dysfunction? It’s a perfectly valid question, one that we will continue to explore.

What we do know is that many traditions speak of this union of the divine and the human.

What did they know? What had they experienced that might lend some insight into our important question?

The writings and teachings of Paul, the most prolific writer and teacher within Christianity, consistently point to this union. For example, while speaking to a group of philosophers and nature worshippers in Athens, he quotes some of their poets: “In God, we live, move and have our being.” Writing to people who lived in a region called Ephesus, he explores this idea further when he says, “the Father is over all, through all and in all.”

In another place, he writes that “Christ is all and in all,” although we are unable to see it until our hearts have awakened to our true self.

Paul then speaks of a mystery that the human mind had failed to comprehend for ages until Jesus revealed it. That mystery was “Christ in you.” This union had always been present but hidden from our minds. Then, only a few paragraphs later, he explains that Christ is the embodiment of the divine in human form.

Of course, this doesn’t explain the evil in the world or our propensity for selfishness. But Paul makes clear that evil exists because the mind has alienated itself from God. Evil, therefore, is simply a byproduct of becoming unconscious of God.
